The municipality of Mondariz Balneario is the smallest in Spain with an area less than 2 km² and exists thanks to its thermal springs. The man who first discovered the MONDARIZ waters was the local doctor Dr. Domingo Blanco Lage, who observed how the local people healed their dermatological injuries using these waters. He then started to recommend the waters within his medical profession for therapeutic ends. The thermal splendor started in the 19th century when the healing properties of the water were recognized by a local doctor, Enrique Peinador, who started the greatest SPA center. Many celebrities, included the royalty of the past century enjoys the therapeutically benefits of Mondariz, qualifying the resort as the best. It attracted kings, rich tycoons like Rockefeller. The total surroundings engulf Mondariz area by an abrupt orography almost sylvan. The characteristic composition of Mondariz water is determined by the granite of the substrate through which the water circulates and confers producing its unique properties. Isotopic analysis clarifies and gives evidence that Mondariz mineral water is really very old and allowing it to be considered of deep flow with the hydraulic residence that varies from 60 to 150 years and at a constant temperature of 16.5 C along the whole year. The sources are protected by a ban on mining and are dedicating the whole area as a place where human activities and industrial activities are prohibited to preserve its ecological nature.
